May 1607-When the first group of Englishmen arrived on Powhatan's land they were greeted with food and drink, even though the Indians were wary of white men, having encountered them in the past.

May 26, 1607- Indians attack settlers, killing 2 and wounding 10.

December 2, 1607-John Smith is captured, his men killed by Indians.

December 29, 1607- John Smith, taken before the Powhantan, is saved by Pocahontas and gains the Indians's acceptance and temporary friendship.

January 1608-Pocahontas brings food to the hungry settlers.

February 1608-Smith and Newport visit the Powhatan and trade beads for provisions. "Sons" are traded, young Thomas Savage is sent to live with the Indians; and Namontack is sent to live with the English. These two and others will serve as interpreters and links between the two groups of people.

May 1608-Pocahontas with Smith negotiates for the release of 7 Indians captured during a raid to seize English swords. A period of peace follows with Pocahontas regularly visiting the Englishmen with goods and messages.

September 1609-Smith is injured badly in a gunpowder incident and sent back to London. President Radcliffe tries to bargain with the Powhatan for food and is tortured to death by the Indian women.

1609-1610-The Powhatans periodically attack the fort and the settlers could not get food. The Powhatan wouldn't trade with them.

1610-1613-The Indians continued to make the settlers lives miserable but the settlers fought back and some tribes would trade with the Englishmen.

April 13, 1613-Pocahontas is captured and brought to Jamestown.

April 1614- After being converted to Christianity, Pocahontas is married to John Rolfe and later goes to England with her husband and new baby.

March 17, 1617-Pocahontas dies in England and when the Powhatan learns that his beloved daughter is dead, the peace is finished. Relations between the two groups worsened as more and more settlers arrrive in Virginia and want land.

1618- The Powhatan dies and his brother Opechancanough becomes chief. After seeing how the Indians are being pushed from their lands, he fights with the settlers for many years.

March 1622-Indians massacred over one-third of the English settlers and started a war that lasted over ten years.

1644-Powhatan's confederacy, completely outgunned and outnumbered and decimated by disease are crushed by the English. The prophecy comes true.

1651-The country's first Indian reservation was established for the remaining Indians.
